Histamine is best known for allergies, but inside the brain it works as a neurotransmitter that shapes attention, arousal, and mood. A single gene — HNMT — controls how quickly that brain histamine is switched off, and variation in it has been studied in relation to ADHD, migraines, and schizophrenia.

What the HNMT gene does

HNMT encodes histamine N-methyltransferase, the main enzyme that inactivates histamine inside cells. Unlike DAO, which handles histamine in the gut, HNMT is the dominant clearance route in tissues without much DAO — including the brain and airways. It adds a methyl group to histamine, ending its signaling.

Because brain histamine helps regulate wakefulness, focus, and neurotransmitter balance, how fast HNMT clears it matters.
