Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) Blood Test

The FSH Test measures a pituitary hormone that stimulates follicle growth and helps regulate the menstrual cycle. FSH peaks before ovulation and is commonly used to evaluate infertility, irregular or missed periods, and ovarian function—interpreted alongside LH and estradiol.

Why Measure FSH?

  • Cycle evaluation: Assess irregular cycles or amenorrhea.
  • Ovarian function: Context for fertility workups when combined with E2, LH, and clinical history.
  • Menopause transition: FSH tends to rise in perimenopause/menopause.

Preparation & Timing

Baseline testing is often done on cycle days 2–5. Note hormones/medications, including fertility treatments.
